Kawoq is a community day, it symbolizes the relation of the group, connecting them to their ancestors and future offspring. It is a day for midwives and day-keepers, rain-makers and cloud-busters. It is a day to balance the rains or call for them when they are not present. This is a good day to ask for the sustenance of the community and the engendering forces of both sun and rain. It also relates to the strength of unity. Kawoq is the lightning, rain storm, and thunder. It is represented by the Turtle. Ancient Maya art depicts the turtle playing a significant part in the creation story. Ancient art will often show a personification of Maize or Jun Jun Ajpu breaking out of a crack in the shell of a turtle. Which is symbolizes maize coming out of Mother Earth. The day Kawoq anticipates Jun Jun Ajpu as it is the fertile rain that feeds the maize.
