Inspiration

The weaving of the Maya Ixil people are some of the most beautiful amongst Maya textiles. And like most Maya textiles, they are sewn with designs that at times tell stories and keep traditions. One of the most well known stories of the Maya Ixil peoples is that of a love story.

There many versions of this story but In Nebaj, Guatemala they tell a story of a .young man and young woman who fell deeply in love. However, both where from two different social classes.

Her father was not happy at all with her choice. He locked her up in their house and forbade her from seeing him.

The desperate young man asked the ancestors for guidance and help for a way to see her again. The ancestors seeing that his love was true, they turned him into a humming bird.

The young girl crying in her room, saw a humming bird fly to her window and remain with her. She soon realized it was the young man.

The girl asked for a waist-strap loom where she began to weave their love story. It is why to this day, the Ixil women of Nebaj, Guatemala weave these designs into their Huipiles, Tzutes, Cortes and humming birds are considered messengers of good news and most important love
